North Canaan, CT | Litchfield County

August 13th, 2020

North Canaan offers a thriving downtown, beautiful mountains, rivers, and some of the area’s largest working farms.  Grab some friends and make a date of Caddie Shack for food, batting cages and mini-golf or enjoy a more rural adventure at one of the local farms, including Freund’s Farm which offers private tours of the farm. Food trucks that frequent Great Falls Brewery in the center of town are always a welcomed complement to the Great Falls Menu and ambiance which occasionally incorporates live music, karaoke, or trivia nights as well.

East Canaan and Canaan Valley are hamlets of North Canaan as well as home to Freund’s Farm, Ford Farm, Pooch Palace Resort, and Laurelbrook Farm. Freund’s Farm Market & Bakery is a must for delicious food, healthy plants, fresh eggs – and the perfect country farm experience! Ford Farm, just down the road has a great road-side farm stand with locally grown produce plus pumpkins, trees and wreaths for the holiday seasons.

With the Blackberry River meandering through town, anglers frequent Jim’s Bait & Tackle before enjoying a day on the river.  Beckley Furnace, a historic site, provides great hiking along the Blackberry River Dam and with beautiful views of the four casting arches, which speak to the history of the property.  Land of Nod Winery and Tasting Room is also a popular attraction further along Lower Road past the Furnace.

Nicely complementing North Canaan’s rural farmland, the downtown area offers wonderful dining, shopping, and recreation.  Browse locally-owned shops, share a meal with friends, visit the town pool, play a round of mini-golf at Caddie Shack, or ice skate at the park in the winter – there is always something to do in North Canaan.

Which came first: Canaan or North Canaan?

Two towns with historically unique identities, the town of North Canaan was officially formed in 1878 when it separated from Canaan, CT – now commonly referred to as Falls Village.

Home to the Canaan Railroad Station, North Canaan has always been a hub of activity, connecting the surrounding cities of Hartford, CT & Poughkeepsie, NY and Danbury, CT & Pittsfield, MA along the locally renowned Housatonic Railroad.  Each July, North Canaan celebrates its history with “Railroad Days”, a 10-day festival including a carnival, parade, fireworks, a car show, live music, a street fair, train rides, and a celebration of our local businesses.
