Elyse’s Country Journal – September 19, 2013 – HarneyRE – Salisbury, CT

Salisbury and the surrounding communities of northwestern Connecticut offer a wide range of unparalleled opportunities. Please enjoy Elyse’s Country Journal, published weekly on Wednesday. Elyse’s hope is that it will help open up a new perspective of our area.

  • The Salisbury Association Historical Association, in collaboration with the Scoville Memorial Library, will present another program in the Voices series on Saturday, September 21, at 4 PM in the Wardell Room of the library. Drawing on the recollections of two Lakeville women, Voices chronicles the residents of Lakeville, the houses along Main Street, and their stories. This multimedia presentation by Dick Paddock will feature live recorded memories synced with photos of Lakeville creating a journey through the historical town, with insight on that long-ago world. Voices is an on-going project of the Historical Society, featuring live recorded and transcribed memories of area residents.
  • On Sunday, September 22, at 2 PM, Best Book of 2012 author Daniel Klein will read from his “Travels With Epicurus”, chronicling Mr. Klein’s stay on the Greek Island of Hydra where, accompanied by a copy of the Greek philosopher Epicurus’ Art of Happiness, the 73-year old tries to figure out the most satisfying way to live this stage of his life. Klein is co-author of the international best-seller Plato and A Platypus Walk Into A Bar. This is one of many free events at Noble Horizons at 17 Cobble Road in Salisbury.
  • On Friday, September 27, at 7:30 PM, The Salisbury Forum presents Navigating Identities with Richard Blanco, 2013 Inaugural Poet. A child of Cuban exiles, gay man, and civil engineer, Blanco will comment on his artistic journey as reflected in poetry and prose. The event will take place at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village. Free Admission.
  • The David M. Hunt Library is now selling tickets at an early-bird price to the 12th annual Auction in the Village. The auction will be held Saturday, September 28, 5 to 8 PM. This year’s auction will take place at the newly opened Center on Main, the home of the Falls Village Children’s Theater. There will be catering by Freund’s Farm Market, music by Vance Cannon, and wine, beer and the library’s signature Green Man Grog. Auction items will include vacation accommodations in Mexico, artisan crafts, artworks, items for the kitchen and garden, a fly-fishing trip with The Lakeville Journal’s award-winning fishing writer Patrick Sullivan, the season’s hottest new books and a dinner for six at the Falls Village Inn. Advance tickets are $25 and will be $30 at the door on the day of the event. • On Saturday, September 28, at 6 PM in Salisbury, there will be an original, one-time-only, one-of-a-kind event: SALISBURY, OUR TOWN: AN EVENING OF READINGS CELEBRATING SMALL TOWN LIFE. It will feature well-known actors from stage, film and television who will be reading actual memoir and oral histories found in Salisbury archives along with literary and dramatic selections about New England small town life. The Joint Chiefs will provide music and song. To buy tickets to the program, please go to www.salisburyfamilyservices.org or drop by Johnnycake Books on Academy Street in Salisbury.
